چکیده

Background and purposeTo investigate the accuracy of dwell position detection with a combined electromagnetic tracking (EMT) brachytherapy (BT) system for treatment verification, by quantifying positional errors due to EM field interference in typical pelvic BT clinical settings.Materials methodsDedicated prostate cervix phantoms were imaged CT. For phantom, Utrecht applicator + interstitial catheters used. The implants reconstructed plans created 270/65 positions prostate/cervix phantom. Next, EMT experiments performed settings using prototype EMT/BT system. We quantified from surrounding equipment comparing planned EMT-measured positions. mean residual error between was calculated whole implant including applicator. analysis repeated only catheters.ResultsMean less than 0.5/0.4 mm found. applicator, large deviations up 2.4 Compared free set-up, CT patient bed environments showed larger catheters, but remained <1 all cases.ConclusionDwell is sufficiently accurate perform EMT-based verification. effect limited.

A dwell position verification method for high dose rate brachytherapy

Misplacement of dwell positions is a potential source of misadministration in high dose rate brachytherapy. In this work we present a dwell position verification method using fluoroscopic images. A mobile C-arm fluoroscopic machine is used to take a snapshot of the treatment machine's check cable as it reaches the most distal dwell position. This fluoroscopic image is displayed side-by-side wit...

Electromagnetic tracking for treatment verification in interstitial brachytherapy

Electromagnetic tracking (EMT) is used in several medical fields to determine the position and orientation of dedicated sensors, e.g., attached to surgical tools. Recently, EMT has been introduced to brachytherapy for implant reconstruction and error detection. The manuscript briefly summarizes the main issues of EMT and error detection in brachytherapy. The potential and complementarity of EMT...

Developing a Verification and Training Phantom for Gynecological Brachytherapy System

Introduction Dosimetric accuracy is a major issue in the quality assurance (QA) program for treatment planning systems (TPS). An important contribution to this process has been a proper dosimetry method to guarantee the accuracy of delivered dose to the tumor. In brachytherapy (BT) of gynecological (Gyn) cancer it is usual to insert a combination of tandem and ovoid applicators with a complicat...

Autoactivation of source dwell positions for HDR brachytherapy treatment planning.

The most accurate classical dose optimization algorithms in HDR brachytherapy strongly depend on an appropriate selection of source dwell positions which fulfill user-defined geometrical boundary conditions which are relative to patient anatomy. Most anatomical situations, such as for prostate and head and neck tumors, are complex and can require geometries with 5-15 catheters with 48 possible ...
